Professor Roy Hinkley, Jr., most famously known as "The Professor," is a fictional character from the 1960s American sitcom Gilligan's Island. Portrayed by Russell Johnson, the Professor held degrees in various scientific fields, including botany, zoology, chemistry, and physics.

While the details of his pre-island life remain somewhat vague, he was depicted as a highly intelligent and resourceful individual. He brought along scientific equipment on what was supposed to be a three-hour tour, implying his life likely involved research and teaching.

On the island, the Professor was the group's resident problem solver, concocting inventions and strategies to try and escape. Despite his best efforts, their attempts were invariably unsuccessful, solidifying his role as the eternally hopeful intellectual marooned with his fellow castaways.

Although the show painted him as a genius, the comedic aspect was that he could never figure out how to repair the hole in the boat which stranded them in the first place.
